The long wait for a World Cup goal is over for the prolific Polish striker.
Robert Lewandowski has finally scored a World Cup goal as Poland defeat a lurking Saudi Arabia to go top of Group C at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
It was a spectacular game of football as the Arabians gave the Europeans a run for their money during the second Group C encounter of the ongoing competition.
Saudi Arabia, who shocked the World as they defeated Argentina in their opening group game, followed up with a scintillating performance against the Poles.
However, they were the architects of their undoing as Poland capitalised on silly mistakes conjured by them.
In a feisty first half which saw the Arabians dominate proceedings, it was Poland who scored first with Lewandowski putting on a plate for Piotr Zielinski who fired home from close range.
As the first half was nearing its end, Saudi Arabia were awarded a penalty after a lengthy VAR check, but heroics from Juventus Wojciech Szczesny kept Poland’s lead intact.
The second half began with Saudi dominating and creating chances, but they were left to rue their missed chances as Lewandowski pounced on a mistake from Abdulelah Al Malki to score his first World Cup goal.
Poland would be hoping to secure a place in the next round of the competition if they secure a win against Argentina in the final match of the group stage.
