After several days into the ongoing #EndSARS protests in Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, October 9th, 2020, finally addressed the nation on the issue concerning police brutality in the country.

President Buhari said that Nigerians should not doubt the efforts of his administration to reform the police.

The President tweeted, “I met again with the IGP tonight. Our determination to reform the police should never be in doubt. I am being briefed regularly on the reform efforts ongoing to end police brutality and unethical conduct, and ensure that the Police are fully accountable to the people.”

Furthermore, President Buhari assured Nigerians that the IG, Mohammed Adamu has his firm instructions to address the concerns of Nigerians, and ensure that all erring personnel are punished.

“The IG already has my firm instructions to conclusively address the concerns of Nigerians concerning these excesses, & ensure erring personnel are brought to justice. I appeal for patience & calm, even as Nigerians freely exercise their rights to peacefully make their views known.”

The ongoing #EndSARS protests has taken place in many cities in the country with a massive amount of Nigerian youths including big Celebrities marching on the streets, demanding that SARS, a police unit accused of brutality and harassment, be scrapped.

Protesters in Lagos State, including @mrmacaroni on Thursday, spent the night outside of a government building.

Nigerians in Diaspora, including big celebrities like Wizkid, John Boyega and several others have planned to conduct #EndSARS protests in the foreign land they are situated in.

The ongoing #EndSARS protests has lasted a week in Nigeria and on Friday, October 9th, 2020, became the #1 trending hashtag worldwide on Twitter.
