DJ Switch Reveals Truth about Her Ordeal at the Lekki Massacre.

For those who do not know, DJ Switch was the person who was giving Nigeria—and the whole world—situation reports during the Lekki Toll Gate massacre. This brave, compassionate, and patriotic Nigerian, together with a handful of people, looked death in the face as she captured the shootings as well as helped the injured. In this recently viral video, she shares her experiences during Black Tuesday.

Introductions…

She started the video by appreciating Nigerians for their prayers and well wishes, as well as spreading word of the attack. Speaking about her fellow protesters at the gate, “…I’ve never met a finer set of people in my life.” She also appreciated the people who saved her, and helped her get out of danger.

She continued,

“People were falling left and right. Yes, there were soldiers there. Another part that people were not really talking about—the Police also came, the SARS people we’re talking about… they also came. Some maybe 40-45 minutes after the soldiers left.”

With tears wrinkling her eyes, “We were tear-gassed… It’s like… Cotonou pepper mixed with acid.” After using a moment to gather her thoughts, “We were running and coming, and the only thing we fought with was our flags. We would sit on the floor and raise our hands up; waving our flags and singing the national anthem—that’s what we had.”

Now clearly heartbroken, filled with tears, “They put off the lights. On a good day, in that axis, there’s always light at the tollgate. There were no lights; lights were off… streetlights were off. It was pitch black.”

At this point, she couldn’t continue the video and had to take a moment. Remembering the moment someone sacrificed himself for her sake, she recounted, “A boy jumped on me, and was shouting, ‘cover her.’ They shot that boy on my back… I don’t even understand why he did that—they shot him on my back.”

As she fell, she, and others, ran around picking the gun shells, just as the soldiers picked it too. They wanted proof. Displaying the bullets, she revealed one that had bit her just past her ear; and another she took out of a wounded’s lap.

“The military. They were there. On Nigerian soil. Killing Nigerian citizens. The police and the SARS came… doing the same thing—aiming and shooting–live bullets.”

Tears welling up in her eyes again, “Who takes live bullets to a protest? Who does that?”

“We carried dead bodies and dropped them at the feet of the soldiers, while we asked the commander, ‘Why are you doing this?” I wish we hadn’t done that. I wish we took the bodies because they carried the bodies and put them in their van.”

She went further to plead with people using her name to open fake accounts and spreading misinformation.

“Please… stop saying things you don’t know. I understand things are hard, but at least, copy the truth and put—that’s all I’m asking.”

“I never said 78 people died. I never said that… I never said my cousin died. We counted about 15 people dead. I don’t know if it was more than that, it was difficult to tell.” She recalled. “People did die. It was not photo shopped.”

To our Leaders…

“I urge you, please, do not insult the grief of Nigerians. Do not insult the intelligence of Nigerians. Do not insult the pain that families are facing… We must continue to move. If we stop, I fear it will probably be the next 60 years before we talk about this again. But we must continue peacefully. I condemn any sort of violence.”

Lastly, she urged Nigerians to be accountable, and encouraged us not to give up. This is a queen I stan! Not very many people can stand in the face of death as she did: “When you face the possibility that you are going to die, trust me, you’ll be afraid.”
