In 2019, Robben initially announced his retirement from professional football after his final season at Bayern but decided to return to FC Groningen- the club where it all began in 2000.

Unfortunately, the Dutchman has called time on his career after an injury ravaged 2020-21 campaign with the Eredivisie League side.

Robben announced confirmed the news of his retirement via his social media accounts, alongside a shirt message to his followers.

“Dear football friends, I have decided to stop my active football career,” he wrote on his Twitter account.

“A very difficult choice. I want to thank everyone for all the heartwarming support!

“Regards, Arjen.”

The Former Netherlands International will be regarded as one of the best in his generation. Perhaps, his ability to torment opposition defenders with his pace and dribbling skills will be remembered for a long time.

Despite the impact of injuries in his final year of professional football, Robben would still be regarded as one of the world’s most gifted left-foot players.

Robben broke into senior stage at Groningen before making a transfer to PSV in 2002. Two years later, he was snapped up by Chelsea after winning the Eredivisie title with Eindhoven-based club.

At Chelsea, Robben won six trophies including two Premier League titles, scoring 19 goals in 109 appearances for the club.

Real Madrid signed him in 2007 and he won the League title and Supercopa de Espana in his first year with the club, but he was sold to Bayern Munich after an underwhelming second season at the club.

Robben enjoyed his most productive years at Bayern Munich where he scored a total of 144 goals in 309 matches. He won a total of 20 trophies at the Allianz Arena, including a Champions League and eight Bundesliga titles.

Meanwhile, at international stage, Robben was not bad either. He scored 37 goals in 96 outings for the Netherlands and inspired the nation to the 2010 World Cup final.
