According to John Locke, the human mind is a tabula rasa (an immaculate clean slate). All we come to know, and how we act, are all learned from our experience.

Furthermore, in the book of Proverbs 22:6, parents are instructed to “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

However, over the years, many have argued against John Locke’s position and even the stance of Proverbs 22:6.

The rationalists claim that humans are born with innate knowledge. Therefore, a newborn knows he is to suck his mother’s breast. Also, people often opine that children can be raised in a particular way and deviate from it when they grow old.

Hmmm…. Who is right and who is wrong? Let’s visit the Japanese worldview to get our answer.
