Five Things You Should Know About Amanda Gorman

The 46th inauguration ceremony of the United States of America turned out to be an episode of “a star is born.”

Who would have thought that a 22-year-old would steal the show of the 46th Presidential Inauguration Ceremony of the USA? Amanda Gorman shone brighter than a star as she recited her poem “The Hill We Climb” leaving her audience in awe, and gaining global recognition. 

Here are five things you should know about this star, that might one day become the president of the United States of America.

1. Amanda Gorman is the first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate, and she is just 22 years old. She is also the youngest Inaugural Poet in the history of the U.S.

2. Amanda Gorman went into poetry to help with her speech difficulties. Growing up, she had difficulties pronouncing some sounds and had to teach herself to pronounce these sounds. It was in this process she built herself into the poet and performer the world admires today. A perfect tale of turning lemons into lemonade.

3. Amanda Gorman is a twin. She is African American and was born and raised by a single mother in Los Angeles. Her mom is a middle school teacher, making her a perfect case of rising to the top though from a humble background. 

• When she was 14, she joined a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles called WriteGirl. This nonprofit organization nurtures creativity and self-expression in girls as a means of empowering them. By attending their creative writing workshops, and working with some mentors she blossomed into the amazing writer she is today.

4. Amanda has a dream of contesting and becoming the president of America, in 2036. She is also an awesome storyteller. Her first children’s book titled ‘Change Sings‘ will soon be published. 

5. Amanda has received recognition several times in the past. At age 16, she was named the first-ever Los Angeles Youth Poet Laureate. When she was 17, she was named the inaugural Los Angeles Youth Poet Laureate. A year later, she published “The One for Whom Food Is Not Enough,” her very first poetry collection. Additionally, at age 19, she became the first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate. She achieved this feat when she was in her second year at the prestigious Havard University, where she obtained a BA in Sociology.

Amanda Gorman has proven that words are so powerful, that if you are great at using them, you can change the course of your life. She is equally an activist, that is very conscious of her African heritage, and the era of slavery.
