Grammy 2022: Wizkid snubbed, Angelique Kidjo wins again

The prestigious award ceremony held on Sunday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Nigerian superstar singer Adedeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid failed to win an award at the 64th edition of the Grammy awards.

The talented singer was nominated in two categories- Best Global Music Album and Best Global Music Performance of the prestigious award. However, it was not his night to win the award.

Wizkid was dubbed as the favourite to win the award for both categories because his “Made In Lagos” album was a global hit. One of the hit songs “Essence” topped international charts and won multiple international awards.

Despite all these achievements, the deluxe version of the album could not receive a Grammy award.

Wizkid lost to Angelique Kidjo’s “Mother Nature” in the Best Global Music Album category while Arooj Aftab’s “Mohabbat” won the Best Global Music Performance category.

During her appreciation speech, Angelique Kidjo, who has the award four times, dedicated her award to the Nigerians that collaborated with her on her album.

Disappointment for Nigerians

To Nigerians, however, Wizkid’s loss comes as a huge shock since many believed he was the favorite to win both categories of the award.

“Made in Lagos” was a huge success for Wizkid, but unfortunately, he would have to try to win the award next time.

Other Nigerians who were nominated in the same category of award as Wizkid are Tems, Femi Kuti and Burna Boy.
