The deceased was said to have stolen the doors out of resentment for a previous issue that occurred between them.
A 28-year-old man identified as Kingsley Okoye has been beaten to death by a group of hired thugs, for allegedly stealing and selling his brother’s foreign doors from a construction site.
This tragic event occured on Sunday, July 21, 2024, in the Okpuno Umuogali community of Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra State.
According to reports, the deceased was accused of stealing doors from his elder brother, Joseph Okoye’s uncompleted building.
Joseph, who resides abroad, reported instructed thugs to discipline Kingsley, but the situation took another turn, leading to Kingsley’s death.
A cousin of the deceased, Kosisochukwu Uzoekwe, shared that a longstanding dispute over the sale of a family property by Joseph led to all these. He said that Joseph had sold the land and kept the proceedings to himself, leaving Kingsley struggling financially.
Driven by resentment, Kingsley took and sold three doors from Joseph’s building under construction to buy food.
Finding out about the theft, Joseph sent money to his sister here in Nigeria, instructing her to hire thugs to discipline Kingsley.
These thugs took Kingsley to an unknown location and beat him until he succumbed to his injuries. They later took him to Sahara Hospital, where he was declared dead, and subsequently to FAH Hospital and Embalment Centre.
Joseph’s sister Ebele, whom he sent money to, admitted that the attack on Kingsley was orchestrated by Joseph but denied being directly involved in hiring the thugs.
She revealed that Joseph’s fiancée coordinated the attack. Although the family pleaded with Joseph to be lenient, he insisted on taking disciplinary action.
Speaking about the incident, Joseph expressed regret over the incident, stating that his intention was to recover the stolen doors. He also claimed to have witnessed the attack on Kingsley via video call and was assured he was alive.
However, he was shocked to have heard Kingsley passed away and accused the thugs of exceeding his instructions.
The Oba police have confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation has begun concerning the matter.
Meanwhile, the search for the thugs involved are still ongoing as they have gone into hiding since the incident.
