No one saw that coming!

Argentina’s 36-game unbeaten streak comes to an end as they suffer defeat at the hands of Saudi Arabia in their opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

La Albiceleste were defeated 2-1 by the Arabians in what was a stunning display and spectacular performance from the green side.

Lionel Messi netted the opener just 10 minutes into the game through a penalty. He could have gotten on the score sheet again but his goal was disallowed for an offside.

The game could have been over in the first half, but Argentina saw two more goals disallowed for offside.

A five-minute double from Saudi Arabia in the second half saw them turn the game around in their favour as they held on for a famous win.

Argentina has now lost their first game in a World Cup for the first time since 1990. They were last defeated in a competitive match by fellow South Americans Brazil in the Copa America.

Not only was their 36-game unbeaten streak ended, but unwanted records were equalled as well. This is the first time since 1958 against Germany that Argentina has lost a World Cup match after scoring the first goal, and also the first time since 1930 they have lost a World Cup match when leading at half-time.

Argentina would be hoping to win their remaining two fixtures to increase their chances of making it out of Group C.
