More than a week after a block of classrooms collapsed and killed Muinat Ilebiyi, a female student of Nazareth High School, Imeko, the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has pulled down the structure.
DAILY POST had earlier reported that the building fell on three female students of the government secondary school, killing Ilebiyi and injuring two others.
Gov Abiodun, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin, on Sunday, confirmed that “the building which recently became distressed and partially collapsed on a group of students killing one and injuring two others in the process, was demolished over the weekend on the instruction of the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.”
According to Somorin, Abiodun had further directed the immediate reconstruction of the demolished block of classrooms, adding that any other public building found to be distressed would be pulled down and reconstructed.
According Somorin, the demolition was supervised by the State Commissioner for Housing, Jagunmolu Jamiu Akande Omoniyi and other top government officials.
He disclosed that the demolition of the school building was carried out in the larger public interest, saying it could collapse and injure more students if not demolished.
Gov Abiodun was said to have affirmed that no effort would be spared to prevail on owners of weak buildings posing threats to life and property – whether premises, schools or private residences, saying such buildings would be pulled down in consonance with the State Building Control Regulations and to prevent loss of lives and properties.
It was added that “all identified highly distressed structures, particularly public buildings like schools, hospitals, maternity or health centres will be tested for their structural integrity to be determined and where they fail the integrity test, such buildings will be pulled down and reconstructed,” Somorin stated.
However, the statement did not disclose whether or not government had reached out to the family of the victims.
