On Monday 9th, 2022, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) extended it’s 3 months warning strike by 12 more weeks.
The rollover of the strike by 12 weeks was declared in a statement, signed by the president of the body, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke.
According to him, the addition of 12 weeks to the warning strike is to give the federal government more time to satisfactorily resolve all pending issues betweens ASUU and itself, The Punch Reports.
The Statement Read;
After extensive deliberations, noting the government’s failure to live up to it’s responsibilities and speedily address the issues raised in the 2020 FGN/ASUU Memorandum of Action (MoA) within the additional 8-week roll-over strike period declared on 14th March, 2022, NEC resolved that the strike will be rolled over for 12 weeks to give government more time to satisfactorily resolve all the outstanding issues.
The roll-over strike of 12 weeks will start from 12:01am, Monday, May 9th, 2022.
The body took it’s decision to embark on a rollover 12 weeks strike after it’s National Executive Council meeting which started on Sunday, May 8th.
In a press statement released by ASUU tittled “Update on ASUU roll-over strike,” the body expressed it’s disappointment in the fact that the three-man commitee set up on February 1st, 2022, by the president and the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to resolve pending issues between ASUU and FG have not had any single meeting to date.
The Press Statement Said;
“NEC was equally disappointed that ASUU’s only meeting with the Professor Nimi Briggs-led Renegotiation Committee did not reflect the expected level of understanding, preparation and clarity that undergird collective bargaining going by the Committee’s confession of going about consulting stakeholders. Unless urgent steps are taken to redirect the Committee on concluding a draft Agreement that has been pending since May 2021, its activities may end up as another wild goose chase.”
