Reports from DailyTrust say that a mild drama occured between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Berekete’s family Radio station after the latter’s bid to end the ongoing strike.
The mild drama occured on Saturday, June 11, when the host of the radio station’s programme, Ahmed Isah aka “Ordinary President” invited the president of ASUU, Prof.Emmanuel Osodeke and his team in order to have tangible discussions about the Nigeria’s perrenial problems and why the strike is yet to be called off.
The host, Isah disclosed that he had set up a special intervention bank account domiciled TAJ bank to raise funds for the union to end the strike.
In a bid to convince the body to ND its ongoing strike, Isah publicly displayed the N50m, which according to him was the sum donated by the governor of Anambra state, Governor Udom Emmanuel.
However, at the sight of the money donated, the president of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel was appalled and rejected the donations, saying they should not be associated with such.
After Prof. Emmanuel’s strong rejection of the donations, Isah threatened to discontinue the intervention.
Many Nigerians who placed calls to the radio programme described the body as “insensitive”.
In an interview with NAN last month, Pof. Emmanuel disclosed that the federal government of Nigeria is yet to meet any of it’s demands.
He Said;
“All the issues that made us go on strike are still there, that is a revitalisation fund, that is putting more money into universities and revitilising the infrastructure in the universities. There is also the issue of our mode of payments in the universities. There is no University in the world where lecturers are paid from the Accountant’ General’s Office.
“We have challenged them to provide one, if universities are a universal body, why are they doing things differently? We talk of negotiation of the agreement, the proliferation of universities, among others, so there are lot of issues that they have not resolved.”
