Champions League Recap: Man City Comes from Behind to Beat Leipzig, Mbappe Denies Newcastle

Manchester City finished at the top of Group G in the Champions League after they beat RB Leipzig.

The current holders produced a stunning second-half comeback to win 3-2 at the Etihad.

Lois Openda scored two goals inside 40 minutes to leave his side one goal away from usurping City at the summit of the group.

Phil Foden, who had been quiet in a central role, set up Erling Haaland after the break before scoring the equaliser with 20 minutes to go. He also had a hand in the winner as Julian Alvarez – a game-changer for City off the bench with Jeremy Doku – finished off a flowing move that involved 18 passes.

Newcastle had to settle for a 1-1 draw away to Paris Saint-Germain following a cruel stoppage-time penalty decision as Kylian Mbappe converted from the spot.

Alexander Isak had put Eddie Howe’s side ahead midway through the first half and Newcastle bravely withstood heavy PSG pressure thereafter. But there was nothing Nick Pope could do to stop Mbappe’s penalty after a harsh handball call against Tino Livramento.
