Diego Maradona’s “hand of God” shirt is to go to auction with an estimated price of £4 million

The jersey would be sold to the highest bidder later this month.

Diego Maradona’s Jersey, which he wore when he scored the controversial “hand of God” goal against England in the 1986 World Cup is up for sale at an auction.

The Argentine was in beast mode as he guided his side to a 2-1 against the Three Lions scoring the two goals that sends Argentina to the semi-finals of the competition that year.

His first goal was a mesmeric run through the England team before slotting into the net. That goal was considered the “goal of the century”, but his second goal was a controversial one as he used his hands to beat Peter Shilton to the ball and send it into the net.

The jersey that the legendary Argentine won in that clash is now set to go for auction.

The auction for Maradona’s shirt would be held by Sotheby’s, with the shirt set to go for at least £4 million ($5m) or as much as £6 million ($8m).

Former England midfielder Steve Hodge, who unintentionally knocked the ball towards Maradona for the goal is the person consigning the shirt for auction. After the match, he exchanged shirts with Maradona.

Meanwhile, the shirt has been on loan at the National Football Museum in Manchester since 2002.

According to Sotheby’s, the jersey is still in good condition with the auction set to take place April 20 and bidding to close May 4.

“The shirt is in a good overall condition consistent with heavy use, perspiration and athletic activity,“ a statement on Sotheby’s website read.

“Slight de-threading on hemming on the front bottom of the shirt, and minor spots throughout.”

The shirt will go on public display at the auction’s house New Bond Street gallery in London.
