Dispatch rider allegedly absconds with customer’s gold jewelry worth N2.7m

The rider was reported to the police after several attempts to reach him failed.

The Lagos State Police on Tuesday arraigned a 26-year-old dispatch rider,Chigaemezu Kingsley for allegedly stealing a gold jewelry worth N2.7 million.

Chigaemezu was tried at the Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court on a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretence and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp. Courage Ekhueorohan, told the court that the rider committed the crime on April 2. Ekhueorohan said Chigaemezu absconded with the package, which contained a gold jewelry worth N2.7 million, which was to be delivered to a customer at Sangotedo Ajah.

He explained that after efforts to reach Chigaemezu proved futile, the complainant, Bunmi Agbaje, who employed his services, reported the matter to the police station.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravened sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

After the case was presented, the Magistrate, Sanusi Adigun, granted bail to the suspect in the sum of N1 million, with two responsible sureties in like sum.

She stated that one of the sureties must be of blood relation and must show proof of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government. She also adjourned the case until April 18 for substantive trial.
