The trio have been subjected to racial abuse after missing from the spot in the Euro 2020 final against Italy.
The Football Association, FA has condemned the racial slurs directed at Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka shortly after they failed to score from the spot in the final.
England had gotten to a major tournament final for the first time in 55 years and there were chants of “it’s coming home” everywhere before the final. Even when Luke Shaw two minutes into the game, there was a feeling that England could run away with it.
That wouldn’t be the case though as Leonardo Bonucci levelled for the Azzuri in the 67th minute.
A tense game went into penalties but England penalty woes would set in again.
Rashford, Sancho and Saka all failed to score from the spot in the shoot-out, which ended England’s hope of winning a trophy after many years.
They were all subjected to racial abuse on social media hours after failing to score from the spot.
FA has however, condemned these “disgusting” abuses directed at the trio. According to the FA, they are digusted that these players were subjected to racial abuse on social media.
“We could not be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behaviour is not welcome in following the team,” a statement from FA read.
“We will do all we can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible.
“We will continue to do everything we can to stamp discrimination out of the game, but we implore government to act quickly and bring in the appropriate legislation so this abuse has real life consequences.
“Social media companies need to step up and take accountability and action to ban abusers from their platforms, gather evidence that can lead to prosecution and support making their platforms free from this type of abhorrent abuse.”
Despite England’s players “taking a knee” throughout the tournament, the fight against racism seems far from over.
One could only hope that social media platforms would do more to curb incidents like this on their platform.
