He was plagued with injuries throughout his career.
Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones has annouced his retirement from football at the age of 32.
The defender, who left Manchester United last year as a free agent, made this announcement on Saturday, August 7, 2024, bringing an end to an injury-plagued career.
During an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live on Saturday, he announced that his playing days are over.
“The career finished shorter than what I would have liked,” he began.
“It was disappointing obviously, but it’s easy to look at it glass half-empty, so glass half-full view on it at the minute. I completed my A-licence last season, worked with the 18s a little bit, which was really good, valuable experience. I enjoyed it. Ultimately, I want to get back out there and challenge myself. I fancy myself going into coaching and ultimately taking charge of a team. I know the steps to get there and I’m willing to take that and I’m determined to get there.”
Jones joined Manchester United from Blackburn Rovers at age 19 and enjoyed one full season as a regular starter under Sir Alex Ferguson.
During his time at the Theatre of Dreams, he won the English Premier League in 2013 – the last United won it, one FA Cup and One Europa League crown.
The 27-time England international made 40 appearances for the club in 2011, but saw his minutes reduce drastically as injuries began to plague him. In the 2018-19 season, he made just 18 appearances and then just two the following year.
He was absence for the entirety of the 2020-21 season before playing a very limited role the season after that.
His final appearance as a professional football player was in a 3-0 win against Brentford in May 2022, where he played for only 15 minutes.
