Explained: Why has Serie A banned Green kits?

The Italian top-flight league announced a new rule that will prohibit teams from wearing green kits.

A handful of Serie-A teams have green stripes on their Jersey- either home, away or third kit. Today, we take a look at why the league has chosen to prohibit the use of green kits and what teams would be affected.

Serie A has banned green kits for the purpose of television charity. Although, this only applies to outfield players.

Outfield players are the 10 players on the pitch with the goalkeeper excluded. What this means is that goalkeeper are exempted from this rule.

This rule was set after television broadcasters raised concern that the green of the grass will blend with the green of the kits.

However, this rule does not mean that teams cannot use the green colour as part of their Jersey. It only means that a non-green should be the dominant colour if they are to include green in their stripes.

Teams have released their kits for the 2021-22 season, which means the rule would not take effect from this soon-to-start season.

Though, this rule will be implemented from the 2022-23 season onwards, which gives clubs and kit manufacturers appropriate time to change their stripes accordingly.

Home kits, however are understood to be excluded from this rule, therefore the rule applies only to away and third kits.

Sassuolo, for instance have their home kit to be traditionally green and black, but they would be exempted from this rule since it’s their home attire.

Since away and third kits are affected by this rule, Lazio would have to reconsider their lime-green away kit after the 2021-22 season.

Venezia also have green as their home kit and would not be affected by this rule.
