ASUU may cease to be the ruling body of varsities in Nigeria as things stand.
The Nigerian government is set to present a certificate of registration to the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), which could see them become a replacement for ASUU.
CONUA, which is a breakaway faction of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), will be presented with the certificate as the Federal Government plans to use this to checkmate the latter.
This development was made known via an invitation sent to reporters on Tuesday by the Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Oshundun Olajide.
The invitation reads: “The Honorable Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige cordially invites you to the recognition and presentation of Certificate of Registration to the Congress of Nigerian University Academics.”
“Your media organisation is invited to cover the event and strictly by invitation.”
As further stated by the invitation, Dr Chris Ngige will do the presentation at the Hon. Minister Conference Room, Federal Secretariat, Phase 1, Abuja by 2 pm.
Recall that ASUU has been on strike since February 14 as they continue to be in a tug-of-war with the Federal Government over their demands.
Despite a ruling by the National Industrial Court on Sept 21 ordering the union to resume their duties, the union has remained unmoved.
