He’ll work with Potter – Romano reveals Chelsea’s next sporting director

Football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, has confirmed that Chelsea is on the verge of finalising an agreement with Red Bull Salzburg for the appointment of Christoph Freund as their new sporting director.

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly is looking for a sporting director to work alongside Potter, who replaced Thomas Tuchel a few days ago.

Chelsea is presently working without a sporting director but now wants to bring one in after Potter underlined the importance of the role, having worked closely with Dan Ashworth during his time at Brighton.

However, according to Romano, Freund will work with Chelsea coach, Graham Potter, at Stamford Bridge.

He disclosed this in a tweet on his Twitter handle on Sunday.

Romano tweeted:

“Chelsea are now set to reach agreement on personal terms with Christoph Freund as new director.

“Talks on with Salzburg to get it signed soon. Freund, man behind top deals like (Erling) Haaland, (Sadio) Mane, (Naby) Keita, (Dayot) Upamecano – ideas, data, talents. He’ll work together with Potter.”

Meanwhile, earlier this week, Freund confirmed that he has been in touch with Chelsea.

Freund told Sky Sports Austria (via Daily Mail):

“You should never rule anything out in football, and Chelsea are such a huge club. I have had exchanges with them from time to time. We spoke more often a month or two ago because they were interested in (Benjamin) Sesko.”
