Into the Champions League Finals 2021 – How Much Money is Involved?

Winning a champions league match is rewarding but going all the way to lifting the trophy is more lucrative.

The champions league finals are here again. Two English teams; Manchester City and Chelsea are set to battle it out for the highest club football prize in the world, but what happens to the winner financially?

Simply reaching the group stages of the Champions League is worth millions and could change the status of a small club financially.

As another final beckons, we look at how much money the winner collects alonside the total money involved in every match played.

Winning the Champions League is worth €19 million (£16m/$23m) while the runner-up receives €15 million (£13m/$18m) as a form of consolation.

Rewards are accumulated each round depending on progress and performance which means the overall prize money given to the winner is more than that.

According to lastest figures, winning a group stage match is worth €2.7 million (£2.3m/$3m) and a draw is worth €900,000 (£780k/$1m).

If a teams wins all their group stage matches and eventually proceeds to win the competition, a total of €82.45 million (£71m/$100m) would be earned by the team.

Chelsea have won four group stage matches and drew two, meaning they’ve earned under €60 million, while Manchester City won five group stage matches and drew one, meaning over €60 million has been earned by the team.

Aside from this money allocated based on performance, UEFA still distributes more money to clubs based on broadcast “market pool” concept. What this means is that revenues are allocated based on the size of a television market.

So who would go home with the trophy today? City or Chelsea? I bet we can’t wait to find out soon enough.
