Veteran Nigerian singer and actress, Onyeka Onwenu has passed away at the age of 72.
The iconic singer, according to multiple reports, passed away after performing at an event at Banana Island, Lagos.
Onwenu was said to have slumped after performing at the birthday ceremony of the owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Stella Okoli.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was later confirmed dead.
Onyeka Onwenu was born in 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria. The iconic singer started her music career in the 1980s, releasing her debut album in 1981.
Since then, she has released numerous albums and singles, including her most renowned song “One Love.”
Not only was she a superb singer, but Onwenu was also an excellent actress who starred in numerous Nollywood movies. She has also won numerous awards for her contributions to the music and film industry.
Onyeka Onwenu was also involved in politics. She was appointed as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2013 and later became the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016.
For her numerous contributions to the Nigerian society, she was coveted with the National Honors of the Members of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.
