As the nation continues to grapple with multifarious challenges, a media aide to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Chief Steve Oruruo, yesterday said that quality education remained the bedrock for rapid development and national security.
Oruruo, who is the founder of Steve Oruruo Foundation (SOF) and Special Adviser to the Governor of Enugu State on Information, said this at Akpugo High School, Akpugo during the 2021 Award of Brilliance organized to reward exceptional students in the school.
He equally said that the growth of any society depends on the quality of education that is being imbibed in the children.
Oruruo, who further opined that the award was aimed at creating a healthy competition among school children, also revealed that the state government had committed huge resources into the education sector as a way of building human capital development, tackling insecurity and boosting the state economy in the long term.
“So the foundation is tailored towards raising the bar of education, instigating a healthy competition among the kids and trying to imbibe the norms, values and cardinal principles that make this country great. We want to rekindle the nostalgia of quality education, raise the morale of the kids and create a new wave of competition in line with the legacies of my late father, HRH Igwe Uwakwe Oruruo.
“The vices you see in the world today, ranging from ethnic chauvinism, unbridled violence, religious bigotry, decline in education and corruption that is already endemic could be stopped if we guide the path of the child from the beginning by inculcating in them the values that shield them away from the aforementioned vices.
“We are doing this in furtherance of Governor Ugwuanyi’s blistering performances in the education sector. Education is one of the cardinal points of the present administration in Enugu and the governor has the penchant of delivering it to the door steps of both the privileged and the indigent students,” he stated.
He urged governments at all levels to imbibe the same strategy in tackling widespread criminality and arresting the nation’s economic woes.
Over 25 students who performed excellently in the just concluded 2020/2021 academic session received awards and a variety of gifts courtesy of the foundation.
The climax was the award of scholarship to master Njoku Joseph, a JSS 1 student, to master’s degree level in any university of his choice in any part of the world by the CEO of Fordmarx Nig Ltd, Chief Clifford Ofor Nnaji in collaboration with Steve Oruruo foundation.
The occasion was graced by many dignitaries especially from both the academia and the intelligentsia. Notable amongst them were the Dean faculty of Law University of Nigeria, Dr Sam Nwatu, the Dean faculty of Law, Godfrey Okoye University Prof Gozie Ogbodo, Dr Ifeoma Okafor, the Chairman House Committee on Education, Hon Okereke Akadu and a Veteran Broadcaster Mr Richard Asiegbu.
