Tems makes history with Grammy win, Burna Boy loses out

The afrobeat singer was rewarded for her contribution on Future’s hit single ‘Wait for you’, which also featured sensational Canadian rapper Drake.

Nigerian singer Tems has won her first Grammy award, becoming the first female artiste from the Nigerian music industry to win the prestigious award.

‘Wait for you’ won the award for Best Melodic rap performance, waving off competition from ‘Beautiful’ by DJ Khaled featuring Future and SZA, ‘First Class’ by Jack Harlow, ‘Die Hard by Kendrick Lamar featuring Blxst & Amanda Reiver, and ‘Big Energy (Live)’ by Latto.

She (Tems) becomes only the third Nigerian woman to win a Grammy following Sade Adu who won Best New Artist in 1986 and Cynthia Erivo who won the Best There’re Album category in 2017.

Tems was not the only Nigerian artiste nominated for an award during the night. Burna Boy, another music sensation was also nominated for Best Global Song performance and Best Global Album.

However, he lost the Best Global Song category to ‘Bayethe’ by Wouter Kellerman, Zakes Bantwini & Nomcebo Zikode, and the Best Global Album category to ‘Sakura’ by Masa Takumi
