The Most Peaceful Country in the World in 2020

Peace has always been the top priority of any nation in the world. Every day, the world is stunned by crises and various unforeseen happenings – it even seems like total peace cannot be achieved forever, no matter how hard we try.

Some countries of the world have managed to maintain maximum peace even in the wake of the continuous increase in crisis all around the world such as terrorism, economic devaluation and the current ongoing Covid-19 pandemic that has hit the world like a shock wave.

The Global Peace Index(GPI) is responsible for ranking 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peacefulness.

In its 14th edition titled “measuring peace in a complex world”, it is recorded that the level of global peacefulness deteriorated with the average country score falling by 0.34%. According to this result, the world records a ninth deterioration in peacefulness over twelve years with just 81 countries improving.

Emerging top of the list as the most peaceful country in the world is Iceland, a position it has held since 2008. Following suit in the second position is New Zealand, with Austria, Portugal and Denmark completing the rest of the top five rankings.

Iceland remarkably has no standing army, navy or air force and a low population of 365,000 people. The country enjoys a low crime rate and ranks among the best nations in terms of jobs and earning. 

Though the world is hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, Iceland has been able to eradicate the spread of the virus in the country, keeping the number of cases below 2,000 and just 10 deaths.

 In a country where 97% of the citizens describe themselves as middle and working class, the tension between economic classes is described as “nonexistent” – how peaceful is that?
