Stride’s role as Leader of the House of Commons ended with Boris Johnson’s appointment as Prime Minister, replaced by Jacob Rees-Mogg. He then became Chair of the Treasury Select Committee in October 2019.

In the Conservative Party leadership elections of 2022, Stride actively supported Rishi Sunak and later accepted the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions position upon Sunak’s appointment as Prime Minister.

In September 2023, Stride voiced concerns about the sustainability of the triple lock system in the UK’s state pension system, responding to discussions about potentially scrapping the mechanism used to uprate the state pension after several years of significant increases.
