BREAKING: Palace confirms the news of Alaafin’s death

The Alaafin was said to have passed away after a brief illness.

The Palace of Oyo has confirmed the news of the death of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.

This was revealed by the spokesperson for the late Oba, Mr Bode Durojaiye, who told confirmed the news to the Punch.

“Alaafin is dead. Details in due course” he said.

According to reports by the Punch, the monarch passed away on Friday night in Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti state after a brief illness.

The octogenarian was said to be receiving treatment at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, where he finally gave up the ghost.

Sources also claim that the monarch was billed to be flown abroad to receive treatment. Tickets were already purchased for him, with a few wives expected to accompany him.

News of his death has been relayed to the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde and his remains, however has been brought back to Oyo immediately.

Also, traditional passage rights for the revered monarch have begun.

A brief history of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi

Oba Lamidi Adeyemi was one of the most foremost traditional rulers of the Yoruba Kingdom who was born on October 15, 1938 into the Alowolodu Royal House of Oyo Town.

He first ascended the throne on November 18, 1970, succeeding Oba Gbadegesin Ladigbolu I and ruled for 52 years. The 83-year old was the longest-reigning Alaafin ever.

Death of Oyo Monarchs

Oba Lamidi’s death makes it the third senior monarch’s death the state has experienced in five months.

Recently, the Olubadan of Ibadan, Saliu Adetunji and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Jimoh Oyewumi joined their ancestors.

Although a new Olubadan has been installed, the Soun throne remains vacant.
