As revealed through the US President’s, Trump’s Twitter account, “Tonight, @FLOTUS (meaning First Lady of the United States) and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!”

The First Lady immediately corroborated this, stating, “@POTUS and I are quarantining at home after testing positive for COVID-19. We are feeling good and I have postponed all upcoming engagements,” Melania Trump tweeted.

“This comes after he spent months of downplaying the severity of the virus, refusing to regularly wear a mask, undercutting the government’s top scientists, and so severely mismanaging the nation’s response to the pandemic that more than 200,000 Americans are dead, ” BuzzFeed reports.

What is the White House’s Response?

“The President and First Lady are both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence”, Sean Conley, the physician to the President wrote.

She added, “The White House medical team and I will maintain a vigilant watch, and I appreciate the support provided by some of our country’s greatest medical professionals and institutions,” Conley added. “Rest assured I expect the President to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering, and I will keep you updated on any future developments.”

According to the guidelines from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, Trump, who is 74 and medically overweight, is at higher risk of becoming seriously ill, becoming hospitalized and eventually dying because of the virus.

In case of this eventuality, the United States constitution makes a provision for the vice president to take over his responsibilities as “acting president.”

The White House, however, said it had no plans for such “That’s not even something we’re addressing. We’re keeping the President healthy. We’re keeping the Vice President healthy, and, you know, they’re healthy at this moment and they’ll continue to be.”

Will this have any effect on his Re-Election, just 32 days away?

Meanwhile, this positive test could prove devastating to his political fortunes. Mr. Trump has refused for months to wear a mask in public, while still questioning their effectiveness and mocking Democratic candidate, Joe Biden, for wearing one.

Ever since the outbreak in March, Trump has been aggressively playing down the threat of the virus, repeatedly saying that the US will be “fine” and that warm weather will make the virus disappear. He has been consistent with his claims up until September, pushing the idea that, perhaps, the pandemic is “rounding the corner” and “would go away even without the vaccine.”

According to Anthony Fauci—physician, scientist, and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) since 1984— the idea that the pandemic is dying out “makes absolutely no sense at all.”

“This positive test will undercut his efforts to change the subject away from a pandemic that polls show most Americans believe he has mishandled and onto political terrain he considers more favourable,” The Times reports.

That’s it for now people. If anything, please endeavour to keep safe, ensure proper hand hygiene, and continue to wear your masks. Dispel any claim that the coronavirus is out of the world until official announcement is made from the official health organizations.
