Dr. Stella has discovered the cure for coronavirus. She revealed this in a video outside the US Supreme Court of Justice, during a news conference organized by the America’s Frontline Doctors. The AFD are a team of physicians who are very critical about the disinformation and politicisation of the pandemic.
Dr. Stella Immanuel studied Medicine at the University of Calabar in Calabar, Southeast Nigeria between 1984 and 1990. Since then, she has been a physician at the Rehoboth Medical Centre in Houston and the Southern Paediatric Clinic in Louisiana. In addition, she is a minister who founded Fire Power Ministries, and has a YouTube Chanel that boasts 12,000 subscribers. She is also an author of two books.
Within six hours of posting the video, Donald Trump and his son, Donald Trump Jr. immediately tweeted versions of it. The news giant, Breitbart, also shared it. The video went viral, racking up around 6.6 million entanglements (likes, shares, comments, and reactions) on Facebook and was viewed 17 million times. It was also tweeted about 153, 000 times and several versions of the video can still be seen on YouTube.
The “good” news does not extend further than this as the social media giants Facebook, Twitter and YouTube feverishly worked to delete all versions of the video. They all have unanimously claimed that the video violated their policies on sharing misinformation as regards the coronavirus.
Not only that, Twitter also had good reason to suspend the accounts of both Donald Trump Jr. and Kelli Ward, the Arizona Republican Party chairwoman, who also tweeted the link, for 12 hours. They did no such thing to the account of the President.
Speaking on the matter, President Donald Trump observed,
“For some reason, the internet wanted to take them down, and took them off. I think they are very respected doctors. There was a woman who was spectacular in her statements about it, that she’s had tremendous success with it and they took her voice off. I don’t know why they took her off. Maybe they have good reason, maybe they didn’t.”
Not only social media, but prominent global health organisations have also come up on air to condemn the viral video. The World Health Organisation (WHO) was quoted as saying, “there is currently no proof”. The US Food and Drug Administration (similar to NAFDAC in Nigeria) also warned against the use of the drug outside a hospital setting because of the possible risks to the heart by taking it.
Even major news outlets are not left out of this dangerous massacre. The New York Post was also affirmed that “the video had been designed specifically to appeal to internet conspiracists and conservatives eager to see the economy reopen, with a setting and characters to lend authenticity.”
Even Nigeria had something to say. The Guild of Medical Directors (GMD), a company of private hospitals in Nigeria, spoke through a statement made by its president Prof. Olufemi Babalola,
“There is no scientific evidence to prove the claim. We have watched with dismay the viral video of Dr. Stella Immanuel. As we speak, a study is underway at Lagos University Teaching Hospital on its efficacy and safety.” He affirmed that until a meta-analysis of the study comes up to pool all the results, all anecdotal claims such as the one from Dr. Stella Immanuel should be taken with a pinch of salt.”
This video has caused a lot of divide among Americans, especially politically, as its proponents are pointing to Donald Trump’s support, while accusing critics of covering up its effectiveness. How long will the research and study continue. Is it until it has wiped two-third of the world?
Countless people have also come up to affirm that these social media bodies answer to powerful men, men who are no longer concerned about the grass root and the lives of innocent civilians, but have turned their focus to how lucrative the cure might be for them. (Ranging to the tune of 10 billion dollars per year).
One is reminded of the the popular phrase by Ronald Reagan, “Trust, but verify”, which is to say “Do not trust at all”, or better still, don’t doubt immediately, but always confirm everything you hear. As of now, we have yet to decide whether to stand on the side of Donald Trump and the COVID-19 cure, or the side of health organisations and the social media.
