Suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele has resorted to legal measures to challenge his detention by the Department of State Services (DSS).
In a plea submitted on Tuesday to the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Emefiele seeks the court’s intervention to uphold his fundamental human rights of liberty and freedom of movement as he believes his prolonged detention has no justification.
However, the Attorney General of the Federation office and the DSS has maintained their stance, arguing that his continued detention is legally justified.
Recall that Emefiele was suspended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on June 10 from his position as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Shortly afterwards, he was arrested by the DSS and he has since being in their custody.
The Federal Government explained that he was suspended so as to facilitate an ongoing investigation into his office as well as plans to reform Nigeria’s financial sector.
