The report stated that three out of the 99 bodies were killed at the Lekki Toll Gate shootings by soldiers on October 20, 2020.

Chief Pathologist of the Lagos State University Teaching hospital (LASUTH), John Obafenwa submitted the autopsy report on Saturday to the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry, eight months after the Lekki Toll Gate shootings. The report reveals that a total of 99 deaths were recorded from the #EndSars protests in Lagos.

As at June 6 when the first proceedings took place, Obafenwa was told by the panel to submit the autopsy report.

According to him, these 99 bodies were received for autopsy between October 20 and 24, which includes three killed during the shootings at Lekki. 96 were reported to have been brought from different parts of the State.

While presenting this evidence to the panel, the Professor of Forensic Pathology stated that ethical process had to be carried out especially during a “mass disaster” like this.

“You need to look for hidden fractures or prosthesis.” Professor Obafenwa said.

“It will help if such is discovered because it will be circumstantial evidence to make you say that this body belongs to this person.

“We need to avoid sensationalism. If you look at a page in the report I submitted, all I did was to summarise. However, if I do an autopsy and I do not do radiography, you would tear me to pieces if I come to court with such a record. That is why I had to do everything, leaving nothing to chance.” He concluded.

On receiving the reports, the Chair of the Panel, Doris Okuwobi ruled that the evidence be adjourned for further hearing till June 26.

As we hope for the truth about the shootings, the question still remains; “how many people were killed during the Lekki Toll Gate shootings?”
