CNN released footage on Wednesday which gave new insights to what actually happened at the Lekki Toll Gate on the 20th of October, 2020. The footage was released after a series of investigations. The investigation showed concrete evidence that the Nigerian Army shot at unarmed protesters that night.
Following this release, the Federal Government has pushed for the news cable to be sanctioned.
Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has described the reports by CNN as jaundiced.
“CNN relied heavily on unverified and possibly-doctored videos, as well as information sourced from questionable sources, to reach its conclusion.
This should earn CNN a serious sanction for irresponsible reporting.” He said while addressing the issue today.
In response to these allegations, a Spokeperson from CNN claims they verified videos and photos received from multiple eye witnesses and protesters. The photos and videos were verified using timestamps and other data from the video files.
“Our reporting was carefully and meticulously researched, and we stand by it,” the spokesperson said via email.
