The ban is a result of ongoing political tension in Eastern Europe.

World football governing body, FIFA has suspended Russia from all international competitions until further notice.

Following political tensions between Russia and Ukraine, the association has banned both athletes and officials of the country from participating in any football activity across Europe.

UEFA has also banned Russian football clubs from participating in European competitions such as the champions league and the Europa League.

After a lengthy discussion between the two football bodies, it was finally declared by FIFA on Monday that the Russian national team would be banned from the competition with immediate effect.

The statement reads: “Following the initial decisions adopted by the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee, which envisaged the adoption of additional measures, FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice.

“These decisions were adopted today by the Bureau of the FIFA Council and the Executive Committee of UEFA, respectively the highest decision-making bodies of both institutions on such urgent matters.”

This means that Russia’s World Cup play-off clash against Poland on March 24 is under serious threat. However, the Polish FA has already started that it would refuse to honour the scheduling of the game if forced to face Russia.

Furthermore, It was earlier announced by UEFA that the final of the champions league has been moved from Russia’s St. Petersburg to the French capital Paris.

Meanwhile, political tensions have worsened in Eastern Europe since Russia declared war on neighbouring countries, Ukraine.

Asides from football, Russia has also been banned from competing in the upcoming Olympics by the International Olympics Committee.

Some countries have also shown solidarity against Russia as they demand that the country be banned from any global competition.
