Finally, Lagos Blue Line Rail Mass Transit commences operations

The completed rail mass transit would help reduce the rate of traffic in the state.

Nearly four decades after its conception, the Blue Line Rail Mass Transit in Lagos State has finally commenced commercial operations.

This marks a significant achievement for Lagos, which is one of Nigeria’s most populous and bustling cities.

The project, which was first proposed in 1983, was inaugurated today by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. To commission the rail system, he took an inaugural ride on the newly operational rail system, traveling from Marina to Mile 2.

It should be noted, however, that the first phase of the Blue Line Rail was official commissioned by former President Muhammudu Buhari in January 2023.

The rail system, which stretches over 13 kilometers from Marina to Mile 2, is expected to revolutionise commuting in Lagos and has the capacity to transport approximately 500,000 passengers daily.

According to reports, it is expected to alleviate, significantly, the rate of traffic in the state and enhance the overall mobility of residents and visitors alike.

The first phase of this rail system includes five strategically located stations: Marina, National Theatre, Iganmu, Alaba, and Orile Station. These stations will serve as crucial transit points, facilitating seamless travel across the city.

Also, fare options have been designed to make the modern transportation system available to commuters. For the full journey (Marina to Mile 2), commuters would pay #750, while for partial trips, fares will range from #400 to #500.
