Finally! Liverpool win the FA Community Shield after 16 years

The Reds start the 2022-23 season on the front foot.

Liverpool has won the FA Community Shield trophy after defeating rivals, Manchester City at the King Power Stadium.

It was an evening that boomed with rivalry and breathing of fresh air as two of the best Premier League teams locked horns for the first time this season.

Everything was set off for a crunch encounter that was certain not to disappoint the spectators and glittering atmosphere.

The teams started with the intensity that we expected but it was Liverpool that showed the desire to go in front. This was rewarded when Trent Alexander-Arnold curled a deadly finish into the net after 21 minutes of play.

Man City tried to level matters with new boy, Erling Haaland going close moments later after showing great strength on the ball.

Fast forward to the second half, the frenzy continued and City pulled level with another new boy, Julian Alvarez getting in the equaliser in the 70th minute. Although, his goal was subject to a review by VAR having been judged offside by the assistant referee.

The Reds throw on their new boy Darwin Nunez in the second half and the Uruguayan wasted no time making an impact.

Nunez went close after been put through by James Miller, only to pull a great save from Ederson at the Manchester City goal.

The Uruguayan was involved yet again in the 80th minute, winning a penalty courtesy of a Ruben Dias handball. Liverpool’s talisman, Mohammed Salah converted the resulting penalty to send the Reds in front once more.

Hard work, they say, achieves success and this was a point Nunez was determined the prove. The Reds’ new striker nodded in his goal in the 90+4 minute to seal a 3-1 win for Liverpool after fine work from Mohammed Salah and Andrew Robertson.

That’s Liverpool’s first Community Shield trophy in 16 years.

It wasn’t a frustrating game for City’s new number 9, Erling Haaland, who was kept quiet for much of the afternoon by the Liverpool defence. A glorious chance miss right at the end of the game summed up a frustrating debut for him.

Liverpool can now look forward to the new season with their heads up high as they prepare for the beginning of the 2022-23 Premier League season.
