JAMB Will No Longer Set Admission Cut-Off Marks

Yearly, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) sets a national cut-off mark needed to gain admission into tertiary institutions. This year, JAMB has overruled the national admission cut-off mark methodology.

Henceforth, each university shall put in place the admission cut-off mark of their choice.  

JAMB’s 2021 Policy Meeting

This decision is one of the outcomes of the virtually held  2021 policy meeting which took place on Tuesday, 31st August 2021. The meeting was presided over by the country’s Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu.

Before, the scrapping of cut-off marks being set by JAMB, universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education have adhered to the customary act of sending their various cut-off marks to JAMB.

In the course of the meeting, the Registrar of JAMB in the person of Prof. Is-haq Oloyede informed all present some of the cut-off marks proposed by various universities. He mentioned that Usman Dan Fodio University Sokoto proposed 140, Covenant University 190, Lagos State University 190, and University of Lagos 200.

The meeting decided that all institutions should maintain their minimum score as approved by the policy meeting. All institutions are at liberty to issue admission to candidates based on the minimum score adopted by the institution.

CAPS

Also, as part of the criteria to grant admission, all institutions must upload their candidate’s credentials on CAPS. After which, JAMB would approve the admission and the candidate will accept the offer of admission. 

According to the Minister of Education, 

“Similarly, any institution that issued admission letters to candidates outside CAPS will be punished for such gross indiscipline and fraud.”

Admission granted outside of CAPS is illegal and it impedes the future of those granted this false admission.

Additionally, stakeholders approved that any candidate that fails to accept the admission offer can be changed by the institution but they must first inform JAMB.

All stakeholders agreed that 29th October 2021 is the deadline for the closure of amendments for 2021 admissions. Also, the ministry was left to decide on the deadline for the closure of admissions.

Stakeholders equally consented to the 2021 admission guidelines, which states that all applications for either part-time or full-time programs, whether for a degree, NCE, OND, and any other program must be posted only through JAMB.

Finally, it was concluded in the meeting that prison inmates, the visually impaired, and foreign candidates are exempted from sitting for post UTME exercise.
