Lewandowski wins FIFA The Best Men’s Player of the year award for the second time in a row

The Polish striker has won the award for the second time in a row.

Bayern Munich’s superstar striker, Robert Lewandowski has been named FIFA The Best Men’s Player for the year 2021 for the second time in a row.

The undisputed striker has been rewarded for his exploits in 2021 with a well deserved award.

In 2021, Lewandowski scored 48 goals in 40 games and registered a further 13 assists to his name. To cap his ruthless finishing in front of goal, he won the Bundesliga and the DFL-Supercup with Bayern Munich.

Upon receiving the award in a virtual event held by FIFA on Monday, he said, ” I feel very honoured and very proud and happy.”

“I want to thank my teammates, we all work hard to win trophies. This is a title for everyone around us.”

Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas was also named FIFA The Best Women’s player of the year, just few months after claiming the Ballon d’Or too.

Who else won?

The award started with Canada’s captain Christine Sinclair claiming FIFA the best special award for breaking the all-time international goal-scoring record.

Christine has scored 188 goals in 308 caps for Canada, which is more than any other player in international football history.

Serbia’s Christiane Endler also won FIFA The Best goalkeeper of the year for her extraordinary exploits with Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon.

Africa’s pride

Senegal and Chelsea’s goalkeeper Edoaurd Mendy has been named the best men’s goalkeeper in the world by FIFA.

Mendy was an integral part to Chelsea’s triumphant 2020-21 season as they won the Champions League. In 50 games for the club, Mendy conceded just 27 goals and securing 29 clean sheets.

No wonder he was named the UEFA Champions League goalkeeper of the season in just his first season in the competition.

Lamela’s magic

Erik Lamela was the recipient of FIFA the best Puskaś award for his sensational rabona for Tottenham Hotspur against Arsenal.

The award is awarded to any player who had scored a sensational goal during the year.

Denmark national team and the medical staff have been awarded FIFA the best fair play award for saving Christian Eriksen’s life in a tragic incident at EURO 2020.
The team and the medical staffs responded swiftly when Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest while representing Denmark at the Euros.

Chelsea’s night

Both Chelsea’s men and women head coaches have been named FIFA the best men’s and women’s coach of the year respectively.

Chelsea’s women’s head coach Emma Hayes has been named The Best Women’s coach for 2021 after guiding the blues to a domestic treble.

With Chelsea she’s won the FA Cup, League Cup and Super League in 2021, becoming the first Chelsea manager to win a domestic treble.

Thomas Tuchel on the other hand guided Chelsea men’s team to a Champions League trophy, just after taking the job mid season.

Tuchel said after winning the award, ” I enjoy the journey. I enjoy the club. This is a good fit.”

“I am grateful to have a such a support around me and to feel so good in such a competitive club.”

Ronaldo wins again

Despite missing out on the final shortlist for the prestigious award, Cristiano Ronaldo was still recognised on the night

The Portuguese superstar received the FIFA special award for becoming the all time international topscorer in 2021. Ronaldo has scored 115 goals in 184 caps for his country and registered 40 assists.

Who is in the FIFA Men’s World XI?

At the end of the event, the World XI for 2021 was also revealed which consisted of a goalkeeper, three defenders, three midfielders and four attackers.

The starting XI for the men’s team is a s follows: Gianluigi Donnaruma; David Alaba, Ruben Dias, Lenardo Bonucci; N’golo Kante, Jorginho, Kevin De Bruyne; Cristiano Ronaldo, Erling Haaland, Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski.
