Manchester United suffered a record equalling loss at home.

Manchester United were beaten 6-1 by Tottenham on a record equalling Sunday at Old Trafford.

The Red devils started brightly and went ahead just two minutes into the game via a Bruno Fernandes penalty. However, the lead was short-lived as Tottenham ran riot from then on. Tanguy Ndombele smashed home from close range to draw Spurs levell after a shocking display of defending from United’s captain Maguire. 

Maguire would be at fault again after he fouled Harry Kane in midfield. The England skipper played an immediate low through ball to the ever lively Son Heung-min to latch on to and clip past David De Gea.

United were reduced to 10 men with Anthony Martial sent off in the 28 minute for tapping his arm in Eric Lamela’s face after the latter appeared to elbow him. That red card was the earliest ever earned by a united player in the premier league.

Moments later, Harry Kane won back possession at the edge of the box and played a one two pass with Son before finishing calmly into the bottom right corner, following an Eric Bailly’s wrong pass to Nemanja Magic.

The South Korean would double his tally however, after reacting quickest to a lovely ball into the box by Serge Aurier to finish through the legs of David De Gea. That was Tottenham’s fourth of the night just before halftime.

Serge Aurier added a fifth for Spurs minutes into the second half after he was left unmarked by Paul Pogba. The latter would then crown a poor individual display by conceding a penalty after a foul on Ben Davies. Harry Kane stepped up to take the penalty kick and clipped his shot past David De Gea to make it a double for him and six for Tottenham overall.

United saw a few records broken and set after an abject display.

The result means that the red devils have equalled their worst defeat of the Premier league era – they last lost 6-1 to Manchester city in 2011. In addition to that, united conceded four goals in the first half of a premier league match for the first time. They have now conceded at least two goals in each of their first three games of a season since 1972.

United will hope to bounce back from this humiliating defeat when they face Newcastle united on Saturday in the premier league.
