Money or Friendship (A Short Story)

Money or Friendship (A Short Story)

Tunde showed up in the club with a bunch of guys to groove and have a swell time. They bought drinks and got girls dancing at their table.  The night was young and it felt like time halted for them to unwind. Just then, Tunde’s phone beeps and he receives a text from one of his bosses inviting him to join his table. Tunde was a bit stunned; he wasn’t expecting his boss to be at the club. He got up, told his friends he would be back.

Swiftly he walked towards his boss’ table which was at the VIP session. Tunde was a party animal but this was the first time he was entering the VIP session of the best club in Lagos. His boss was in the company of some men and a few girls. But what got Tunde almost vomiting his bladder out was the girl sitting on his boss’ legs fumbling with his hair. To add salt to injury the boss lowered his head placing soft kissing on her cleavage and she giggled. In return, she planted kisses all over his face.

Tunde felt his brain spinning. What he was seeing sapped out all the alcohol he had drank leaving him as sober as a banker on a Monday morning. The girl on his boss’ leg is Amina, his best friend’s fiancee, they were to get wedded in two weeks. Unlike Tunde, his best friend Ola was a church boy who does not go clubbing or even engage in sex before marriage. Little did he know his fiancee was Jezebel’s apprentice.

“Why are you standing there Tunde, sit down and have a drink.” Said his boss. Amina decided to have a good look at who her lover was addressing only to see her fiance’s best friend staring at her. Tunde lowered himself onto a chair while maintaining his gaze on a perplexed Amina. He was the last person she was expecting to see. Tunde couldn’t believe that he of all people was whom God chose to help expose the truth to Ola.

“Tunde, why is your gaze fixed on my woman?” Asked his boss, but before Tunde could respond his boss continued, “I know she is very beautiful, and I can’t believe she will soon be a Mrs.” He turned his gaze towards Amina, and planted a kiss on her lips and said, “I hope you know I am still the original owner of your body? That your husband is a mere tenant.” Amina, looking uncomfortable, nodded her head in affirmation.

At that point, Tunde’s whole body was shaking with rage. He brought his phone to text Ola to come over immediately. Before he could compose his text, a text popped up on his phone, it was from Amina. He read her text, in which she threatened to ruin his life and get him fired if Ola ever finds out about her affair.

Tunde was in a dilemma. He was due for a promotion which will entail him being sent to his company’s headquarters in Canada to work there. His promotion papers are sitting pretty on the desk of the man shamelessly fumbling with his best friend’s supposed fiancee. She could ruin all his hard work if he informs Ola, but if he doesn’t, his innocent and sweet friend will be marrying a nightmare.

Tunde feigned a serious headache and left the club without bidding his friends goodbye. He was in a dilemma. His phone rang and the caller was Ola. After putting thoughts to it, he accepted the call. Ola sounded excited and in a loud voice, he said “Tunde I bought a tuxedo for you as my best man. The moment I saw the tuxedo I knew it was meant for you.” Tunde felt tears run down his cheek. For the first time in a while, he looked at the sky hoping to see God and ask for a way to go about his dilemma.

  1. I think the only person I will discuss with hear is my boss. Telling my best friend does not necessarily guarantee a break up because I have seen people make illogical decisions in the name of love. So, I will keep my job and tell my boss I know his little secret. That can even speed up my promotion process.
