Pope Francis, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, congratulated President-elect Joe Biden during a call on Thursday Morning, making him the latest world leader to ignore Donald trump’s refusal to concede.
According to a statement from the newly arrived government, the duo discussed some policy areas in which Biden is likely to break from President Trump.
A read-out of the statement reads, “The president-elect thanked His Holiness for extending blessings and congratulations and noted his appreciation for His Holiness’ leadership in promoting peace, reconciliation and the common bonds of humanity around the world.”
“The president-elect expressed his desire to work together on the basis of a shared belief in the dignity and equality of all humankind on issues such as caring for the marginalized and the poor, addressing the crises of economic change, and integrating and welcoming immigrants and refugees into our communities.”
The Pope has been outspoken in recent years about the problem of climate change and has repeatedly called on global leaders to take more action in confronting them.
Meanwhile, Biden has laid out grand plans to tackle the climate crises, and also lift the US’ refugee resettlement threshold, which Trump had lowered considerably.
When Biden is sworn in on January 20, 2021, he will also be the second Catholic President in US History, the first being John F. Kennedy.
Known as a deeply devout person of faith, Biden often delivers speeches with references to biblical language or the pope.
