European Countries Gain Popularity Among Students for Affordable Study-Abroad Options
As more students from Nigeria and various countries seek study-abroad opportunities, European countries are increasingly becoming preferred destinations. Many top universities in Europe offer low or no tuition fees, a lower cost of living, and enhanced career prospects, making them attractive to students.
A recent report by AfterSchoolAfrica highlights Europe as a top study destination, citing its excellent infrastructure, stable political environment, and robust economy. European countries provide ample opportunities for studying, working, living, and raising a family.
Donjeta Pllana, a data researcher at Erudera, emphasises the importance of considering affordable countries for international students. While some universities worldwide do not charge tuition fees, administrative fees may still apply to fund services related to student administration and supervision.
The appeal of European countries for study extends beyond education to work opportunities. The quest for better economic prospects, especially among younger individuals facing challenges like high inflation and unemployment, has led many Nigerians to seek opportunities abroad.
The British government reports a significant increase in sponsored study or student visas for Nigerians, rising by 768.7% to 59,053 in 2022 from 6,798 in 2019. Canada and Australia have also experienced growth in study permits issued to Nigerians.
As students gear up for the upcoming academic year in September, here are the top eight European countries that offer low or no tuition fees, along with the flexibility to work part-time:
1. Germany:
- Tuition: Free
- Administrative Fee: Approximately €250 per semester
- Work Opportunities: Full-time for 120 days or part-time for 240 half days during studies; 18 months post-graduation stay to seek employment.
2. France:
- Tuition: Subsidised by the government; relatively low-cost
- Work Opportunities: Up to 964 hours per year during studies; up to one-year post-graduation stay for employment search.
3. Greece:
- Tuition: Starting from €1,500/year for Non-EU students
- Work Opportunities: 20 hours per week during the semester; 40 hours per week during vacations.
4. Iceland:
- Tuition: No tuition fees; annual admin fee of ISK 75,000
- Work Opportunities: Up to 15 hours per week during the academic year; post-graduation stay for six months to search for employment.
5. Poland:
- Tuition: Tuition-free for Polish, EU/EEA, and Switzerland citizens; Non-EU students pay starting from €2,000/year.
- Work Opportunities: 20 hours per week during studies; 40 hours per week during holidays; up to nine months post-graduation stay for employment search.
6. Finland:
- Tuition: Starting at €4,000 for English-taught degrees
7. Austria:
- Tuition: €762/semester
8. Malta:
- Tuition: Starting from €1,080 for non-EU students.
These countries offer a combination of quality education, work flexibility, and affordability, making them appealing choices for international students.
