Two Suspects Arrested Over the Assassination of Haitian President

The President of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse on Wednesday 7th July 2021, was assassinated in his residence in the outskirts of the state’s capital Port-au-Prince. His wife Martine Moïse was equally shot and reports have that she is currently undergoing treatment. However, the state of her health is yet to be disclosed.

The assassination of the President was announced by the country’s interim Prime Minister, Claude Joseph. He vowed that those responsible for the assassination will not go unpunished and the country was  placed under a “state of siege.” 

Less than 24 hours after the assassination, there has been a fierce altercation between security agencies and the suspected group of assailants. According to The New York Times, four suspected assassins have been gunned down and killed by security operatives and two suspects have been captured. 

The identity of the captured suspects have not been revealed to the public neither have their connection to the assassination established.

Reports have it that some of the assassins are still on the run and security operatives are vehemently hunting them down.

Leon Charles, the police chief of Haiti asserted that other suspected members of the assassin group were still on the run but the country’s security forces were in control of the situation.

Before the President’s assassinations, Haitians have taken to the street to protest for his removal from office. Jovenel Moïse had clung to power for over a year and ruled by decrees despite the expiration of his tenure.

Nevertheless, people fear that this incident might lead to more unrest in Haiti and worsen the state of her already shaking politics.
