Two other Federal Universities also make the top ten list of best universities in Nigeria.
The University of IBadan (UI) has been ranked as the best University in Nigeria in a lastest ranking of universities released by the Nigerian University Systems Rankings.
Regarded as the premier University in Nigeria, UI has continued to maintain its standards without any discrepancies according to the rankings.
In second and third place are Redeemer’s University and Covenant University.
The Nigerian University Systems Rankings started in September 2001 under the umbrella of the National Universities Commission (NUC) with three motives in mind.
Firstly, it was brought forth to inform admission seekers and the populace about the relative standing (performance) of the universities in Nigeria and their programmes. This would assist them on seeking admission to universities to study their preferred career choices.
Secondly, it was set up to aid the government’s decision in the allocations of funds in a transparent and objectively driven manner. Hence, funds would preferentially be allocated to identified centres of excellence.
Lastly, it would assist the NUC, whose mandate includes the orderly development of universities, to advise the government on programmes and universities that should be strengthened to address the projected human resources needs of the country.
All these led to the annual ranking of all the universities in country since 2001.
Also, completing the overall top ten varsity list are Ladoke Akintola University, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Afe Babalola University, University of Ilorin, Babcock University, Landmark University and Edo University.
