FIFA donates humanitarian supplies and pledges $1 million to Ukraine amid crisis

The football governing body has shown compassion for victims of the war in Ukraine.

World football governing body FIFA has sent humanitarian supplies and pledged a sum of $1 million in funds to support Ukraine amid the country’s invasion by Russia.

The war between the two neighbouring countries is approaching the one month mark, and FIFA says it has been providing aid.

This includes the hefty sum which has been allocated to the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) to help those in need.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in a statement, released on Saturday, that the football body would further provide support to Ukraine during the crisis.

“In the face of this conflict, we want to do our part and support the people in Ukraine and the ones who have fled the war,” he stated.

“The FIFA Foundation stands ready to provide some of the needed assistance by working in coordination with the football community in Ukraine and in the region.”

Meanwhile, sanctions have been imposed upon Russia by both UEFA and FIFA as they continue to show support for Ukraine. As a means of showing support, FIFA has banned Russia from participating in their Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifier.

This means that Russia would not participate at the upcoming World Cup in the summer. Russian athletes have also been banned by the IOC from competing in the Olympics.
