Comoros’ Major Production and Exports

Comoros is the second-biggest producer of vanilla in the world. The country’s vanilla is only second to that of Madagascar. In the production of ylang-ylang, Comoros is second to none. The country is the largest producer of ylang-ylang globally.

As a country, Comoros is a major exporter of vanilla, cloves and perfume.

Comoros’ Population and Size

The population of Comoros is less than one million people. By landmass, Comoros is the fourth-smallest African country. The country is a volcanic archipelago, located on the East African Coast. You might be wondering what is a volcanic archipelago.

In simple terms, an archipelago is a group of scattered islands close to each other. Such islands were created by volcanoes erupting from the ocean floor. Therefore they are called archipelagoes. Comoros has four islands and the country’s capital is Moroni.

Comoros’ Economy

Comoros gained independence from France in 1975.

Their incumbent President is Azali Assoumani. He has been in power since 2016 and this is not the first time he is ruling the country.

In 1999, Azali Assoumani led a coup that ousted Tadjidine Ben Said Massounde, who was the then temporary President. Consequently, he ruled from 1999 to 2002. In 2002, he won a multi-party election and ruled from 2002 to 2006. Azali Assoumani returned to power in 2016 and has remained in power to date.

Comoros’ Official Languages and Religion 

Furthermore, Comoros have three official languages. They are;

• Comorian

• French, and

• Arabic 

The most practised religion in Comoros is Islam.
