Originally, in the obsolete Roman calendar,  September was the seventh month of the year. It was accordingly known as Septem, which means “the seventh month.” However, September became the ninth month of the year, after the addition of January and February into the calendar in 451 BC.

Historically, September had just 29 days. It was the reform of the Roman calendar by Julius Caesar in 46 BC that led to an additional one day.

The Anglo-Saxons knew September as Haefest Monath, which means harvest month. At a point in time, the Anglo-Saxons knew it as the Gerst Monath. When translated Gerst Monath means barely a month. 

Also, Adolf Hitler invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. Thereby, starting World War II.

Four US commercial planes were hijacked and crashed by terrorists on September 11, 2001.

September has two Zodiac signs. People born in early September are Virgos. While those born from 23rd September are Libras.
