Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has admitted he was tempted to move to Saudi Arabia, where he would have joined Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League.

Messi instead opted to sign for the MLS side on a free transfer in the summer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain.

The Argentina captain has now confirmed that he did have the option to move to the Saudi Pro League instead and did consider the possibility of following eternal rival Ronaldo to the Middle East.

Messi told Time: “My first option was to return to Barcelona, but it was impossible. I tried to return, but it did not happen.

“It is also true that later I was thinking a lot about going to the Saudi League, where I know the country and they have created a compelling competition that can become an important league shortly.

“It was Saudi Arabia or MLS, and both options seemed very interesting.”
