The embattled agitator of the IPOB requires urgent medical treatment as his health continues to deteriorate, according to his counsel.
Counsel to the embattled leader of the proscribed group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has pleaded with the Supreme Court over the health of his client who’s being held in custody of the Department of States Services (DSS).
Speaking on Thursday, May 11, 2023 during the hearing at the Supreme Court, Mike Ozekhome expressed fears that Kanu may die in custody due to his deteriorating health.
According to him, his client’s health has deteriorated to the point that he now requires an urgent surgical operation.
The lawyer pleaded with the court that his client should be transferred from the DSS custody to Kuje correctional centre where he can begin his treatment.
Ozekhome said “My Lords, Nnamdi Kanu is sick, he has been approved for surgery but they have refused to release him for treatment.
“We are pleading for him to be transferred from DSS custody to Kuje correctional centre so that he can begin treatment like others.
“He’s getting really sick, I’m scared he may die in the custody of DSS. Dead bodies are not prosecuted.”
Responding to the lawyer’s plea, the Supreme Court prayed that God will keep the embattled agitator alive and that he will not die in detention.
“Nnamdi Kanu will not die in detention. God will keep him alive and his blood won’t be in your hands,” the court said.
Proceedings were adjourned by the court till September, 14, 2023, when all motions in the case would be held.
