This is why Babaginda annulled June 12 election – Obasanjo

Ex-President of Nigeria. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed that the reason behind the annulment of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election which was supposedly won by late Moshood Kashimawo Abiola was “bad belle”.

The election held on June 12, 1993 was annulled under the regime of General Ibrahim Babaginda.

Obasanjo made this revelation shortly after his investiture as a Trustee of the Abeokuta Club, a sociocultural organization in Egba land.

According to Obasanjo the annulment of the election snatched the opportunity of having three of its prominent sons occupying top positions at different times from Egbaland and Ogun state.

Late MKO was also awarded a post-humous Vice-Patron of the club at Abeokuta during its 46th President Party.

He also disclosed that MKO Abiola was his school mate at Baptist Boys High School, Abeokuta, and said that the late politician deserved the post given to him by the club.

Chief Ernst Shonekan, a former military head of state, who also served as a two-time civilian president also hails from Ogun state.

Obasanjo expressed his regrets about the annulment of the June 12 election, and said that Abiola would have been the third son of Abeokuta to hold the top position of the election was not annulled.

He said;

“I want to thank the (Abeokuta) club for this honour being bestowed on me and the honour being bestowed on my schoolmate MKO Abiola which he richly deserved.

“Kabiyesi, the Alake (of Egbaland) alluded to it. Normally when you win a cup three times, you keep that cup. Isn’t it? If not for bad belle (jealousy). Abeokuta would have produced President of Nigeria three times, in which case we should have kept it permanently.
