The football icon passed away at 82 on Thursday, December 2022.
President of the United States of America, Joe Biden has paid tribute to Brazil’s footballing legend Pelé who passed away yesterday.
It has been tribute after tribute from the football world for the icon whose death was annouced yesterday, and the United States President has posted his own message on social media.
According to him, Pelé’s rise to becoming a ‘soccer legend’ from ‘humble beginnings’ was proof that nothing was impossible.
In his words, President Joe Biden wrote alongside a picture of him and the football great: “For a sport that brings the world together like no other, Pele’s rise from humble beginnings to soccer legend is a story of what is possible.”
“Today, Jill and I’s thoughts are with his family and all those who loved him.”
Pelé is dead but his legacy remains very much alive despite playing football in the nineties. Till today, Pelé remains the only player to win three world cups- 1958, 1962 and 1970.
O Rei (The King) as he his widely regarded in his country, scored more than 1,200 goals throughout his footballing career.
A funeral for the football legend will take place on January 2, 2023, until the morning of January 3. Pelé’s public funeral will start at Santos’ stadium and will last for 24 hours.
Followed by this would be a parade on the streets of Santos before the legend is finally laid to rest at the Memorial Necropole Ecumenica.
